Mrs. Folashade Onanuga

Executive Director

folashade onanugaMrs. Folashade Onanuga, an exceptionally intelligent Chartered Insurance Practitioner is an Associate Member, by examination, of the Chartered Insurance Institute of London, and also of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries & Administrators, London. She was born on 7th of August, 1962 and graduated from the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University) in 1983 with a 2nd Class Upper Honors Degree qualification in English Language.

With over 27 years management experience, Mrs. Onanuga who is presently the Executive Director (Technical) of the Lagos State Pension Commission (LASPEC), had worked for many years in the Insurance sector of Nigeria’s economy. She began her working experience at Glanvill Enthoven Life & Pension Consultants in 1984 and in the period of 5years rose to the position of a Manager charged with the responsibility of meeting the Insurance needs of the high net worth multinational clients of the Glanvill Enthoven group. She managed the insurance portfolio ranging from fire, motor, construction & engineering insurances of the companies some of which were: Julius Berger, Imprest Bakalori, Reynolds Construction, G. Cappa, Dantata & Sawoe, JDP Construction, West Africa Milk Co, now Wamco Friesland, (makers of Peak Milk), Bagco (makers of Bagco Supersack), Airfrance, KLM, ML Lee group etc

Mrs. Onanuga, by dint of hard work as the Senior Manager, Glanvill Life & Pension Consultants between 1996 and 1998, was instrumental to the transformation of the subsidiary company that hitherto operated at a loss to declare profit in her first year of management. She received various awards and several promotions for excellence. She rose from the position of Controller to Assistant General Manager in a short period. She was formally appointed the General Manager/Chief Executive Officer of the subsidiary Company in 2005 and during her tenure of office, the Company became a highly profitable venture with clientele increasing astronomically and this earned her recognition with the Parent Company of Glanvills in the United Kingdom i.e. Jardine Llyods Thompson Insurance Brokers.

As a result of Nigeria’s subscription to the contributory pension scheme in 2004, the Board of Glanvill Enthoven & Co, sought for and obtained a License to operate as a Pension Fund Administrator from the National Pension Commission. Glanvills entered into a partnership with Futureview Financial Services and Unity Bank Plc, on the new venture in 2007. By virtue of her technical expertise, the parent Company of Glanvills, nominated unanimously, that Mrs. Onanuga be seconded to the Company called Future Unity Glanvill Pensions (FUG Pensions), as the Chief Operating Officer/Executive Director. Unity Bank Plc, with the majority holding, had the chair of the MD/Chief Executive Officer, but the management of the Company called ‘FUG Pensions’ rested on Mrs. Onanuga. She was able to provide direction for the budding company that came into being well after other Pension Fund Administration companies had been well established. She was in charge of marketing and carried out oversight functions for the Operations Unit (contribution, benefit administration, policy design), Investment Unit, information Technology, Financial Control, Human resources & Administration and marketing of the company’s products and services. It is worthwhile to note that amongst the group of the Pension Fund Administrators that were licensed at that period, FUG Pensions is the only PFA that is on a good footing in terms of customer base and operational efficiency and is competing effectively in the market with the 1st generation Pension Fund Administrators.
To give direction and lay lasting foundation for the operations of the Lagos State Pension Commission which had the vision of being a leader in the provision of excellent pension fund administration services to employees of the Lagos State Government, Mrs. Onanuga was appointed as Executive Director Technical, LASPEC on the 1st of February, 2010. A position she holds to date.

Mrs. Onanuga is an an adept problem-solver, excellent communicator and a visionary that sees the big picture in Insurance, Life Insurance and Pension practice, operations and consultancy with a bias for the design and management of employee welfare schemes.
She has held prestigious positions in the Insurance & Pension Industry. She was President of the Professional Insurance Ladies Association between 2006 to 2008. , She was also an Ex-Officio Member of the Association, rendering qualitative advice for the advancement of the cause of women in the Nigerian Insurance Industry, a Co-opted Member of the Council of Nigerian Corporation of Registered Insurance Brokers (NCRIB) to deliberate with government on the contributory pension scheme introduced in 2004 i.e. the 2004 Pension Reform Act and a past member of the Council of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria by virtue of her presidency of the Professional Insurance Ladies.

She has presented papers severally on pension issues; she is a regular facilitator on training by many bodies, e.g. The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria, the Certified Pension Institute of Nigeria; a discussant at Professional Fora of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria and had granted interviews to the media on pension administration especially on MITV and Lagos Television.

Mrs. Onanuga has travelled far and wide and is a versatile administrator who has been exposed to many foreign seminars and training programmes.
Mrs. Onanuga, an Assistant Pastor with the Redeemed Christian Church of God is happily married and blessed with four lovely male children.
